"Lady Rowena Rhino was not amused to see Lord Randolph passed out, yet again, on the croquet lawn."
Lady Rowena has seen this before. The hat is perfect. The gloves are immaculate. The expression is the one she reserves for occasions when Lord Randolph has once again mistaken the croquet lawn for a bedroom. She stands with the cane and the composure of a woman who has long since stopped being surprised and has moved directly to being magnificently displeased.
Lord Randolph, one imagines, will not remember any of this.
They belong to Animabilia – a cast of ten sets of African animals reimagined as members of a deliciously fading Edwardian society. Think Downton Abbey, but on the savannah. A world of croquet lawns and dwindling dinner invitations, of notorious libertines and inveterate gossips, of fancy dress balls and expeditions nobody asked to hear about. Each print is a digital collage combining authentic Victorian and Edwardian fashion engravings with vintage natural history illustrations of African wildlife – two worlds that have absolutely no business being together, and yet are completely convincing.
If you've been looking for wall art that is genuinely original, quietly witty, and actually worth looking at closely – this is it.
