"Had Lord Gerald and Lady Juniper Giraffe not heard about the dangers of smoking? Or was it rather, as gossip would have it, that they were just being a touch rebellious?"
Lord Gerald and Lady Juniper have heard about the dangers of smoking. They have simply chosen not to be detained by them. He lights her cigarette with the practised ease of a gentleman who has done this many times in many drawing rooms. She accepts it with the air of someone being mildly scandalous on purpose.
Gossip, as always, is almost certainly correct.
They belong to Animabilia – a cast of ten sets of African animals reimagined as members of a deliciously fading Edwardian society. Think Downton Abbey, but on the savannah. A world of croquet lawns and dwindling dinner invitations, of notorious libertines and inveterate gossips, of fancy dress balls and expeditions nobody asked to hear about. Each print is a digital collage combining authentic Victorian and Edwardian fashion engravings with vintage natural history illustrations of African wildlife – two worlds that have absolutely no business being together, and yet are completely convincing.
If you've been looking for wall art that is genuinely original, quietly witty, and actually worth looking at closely – this is it.
